Malayala Manorama’s corporate social responsibility

Since its inception in 1888, Malayala Manorama has played an important role in Kerala’s social and economic development. Its journalism has been rooted in public welfare. The organisation has supported social progress, inter-community harmony, education, women’s empowerment, civil rights and the welfare of underprivileged communities.

  • Hrithayapoorvam
    Hridayapoorvam
    Hridayapoorvam is a free heart surgery project for patients from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. It was launched in 2000 with an initial contribution of ₹50 lakh. The project was carried out in association with Madras Medical Mission. Contributions from readers and well-wishers later helped build a fund of ₹2 crore. The initiative supported 670 heart surgeries.

    Chennai flood relief
    Tamil Nadu was hit by severe floods in November 2015. Chennai and nearby areas suffered extensive damage. Homes, hospitals and public institutions were affected. Malayala Manorama, in association with Madras Medical Mission, launched a medical aid project for flood-affected communities.

    Bhoomikkoru Kuda
    On World Environment Day in 2010, Malayala Manorama launched Bhoomikkoru Kuda. The programme aimed to plant one million saplings with the support of the State Forest Department. Saplings were distributed through about 60 centres across Kerala. Children were also encouraged to monitor the growth of the saplings and submit observation notes for a contest.

    Save Energy
    The Save Energy project was launched in 2008 in association with the Kerala State Electricity Board. The initiative encouraged students to become volunteers for energy conservation. They were asked to reduce electricity consumption at home for a fixed period. Prizes were given to children who achieved significant savings.

    Sukrutha Keralam
    In 2006, Malayala Manorama launched Sukrutha Keralam during the chikungunya outbreak. The project aimed to create public awareness about hygiene, sanitation and community-level cleaning drives.
  • Tsunami-Rehabilitation
    Tsunami rehabilitation
    Malayala Manorama launched a tsunami relief fund on December 26, 2004, with an initial contribution of ₹25 lakh. The fund was used to support tsunami victims and rebuild homes. Readers and well-wishers from across the world contributed more than ₹5 crore.
  • Ente-Malayalam
    Ente Malayalam
    Ente Malayalam was launched in 2003 to preserve and promote the Malayalam language. The initiative aimed to help younger generations stay connected with their mother tongue. As part of the project, Malayala Manorama released an Ente Malayalam CD to help children living outside Kerala learn the language.
  • Bhuj-Earthquake
    Bhuj earthquake rehabilitation
    Malayala Manorama supported rehabilitation work in Bhuj after the 2001 earthquake. It rebuilt Charpedi village, which had been devastated by the disaster. The project included 119 houses. Each house had a plinth area of 393 sq ft. Roads, a temple, a mosque, a community hall and other public facilities were also provided. The organisation also built 36 houses in Adipur for Malayali families affected by the earthquake.

    Latur earthquake rehabilitation
    Malayala Manorama helped rebuild Banegaon village in Maharashtra after the 1994 earthquake. With financial support from readers, 173 houses were constructed. Each house had an area of 348 sq ft. The rebuilt village included a school, primary health centre, temple, panchayat office, gymnasium, library, community centre, market, open stadium, pond and internal roads.

    As part of Malayala Manorama’s centenary in 1988, 104 houses were built for poor families across Kerala. The company donated 100 houses. Employees from the then four units at Kottayam, Kozhikode, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram donated four houses. Preference was given to widows and persons with disabilities.

    Nallapaadam
    Nallapaadam is a project that channels the energy of students into constructive social and cultural activities. More than 4,500 schools have joined the initiative. The project regularly showcases student-led activities in schools across Kerala.
  • Yuva-Master--Mind
    Yuva Mastermind
    Yuva Mastermind is an initiative to promote innovation among students. School and college students are invited to present ideas for science-based projects. Promising projects are evaluated by an expert panel. Selected entries receive awards.
  • Palathulli
    Palathulli
    Palathulli was launched in response to recurring droughts and drinking water shortages. The campaign focused on rainwater harvesting and water conservation.
  • vazhikunnu
    Vazhikkannu
    Vazhikkannu was launched to promote road safety at a time when road accidents were increasing. The initiative educated people on traffic rules. Award schemes were introduced in schools to build awareness among children.

    Organ Donation
    Malayala Manorama’s organ donation campaign was launched with a five-part series in the daily, exposing the racket behind it and the need for developing a healthy organ donation culture.
